Germany’s parliament will debate Chancellor Angela Merkel’s plan to supply Iraqi Kurds with military equipment to fight the Islamist State, pro-Merkel legislators tell dpa.
With opposition to the aid growing within Germany’s pacifist-tinged population, legislators would be recalled from summer recess next week to debate the proposal to fly night-vision goggles, four-wheel-drive trucks and other gear to Iraq for the Kurds.
The sources, who declined to be identified by name since the session has yet to be officially announced, said that in allowing the debate to take place they were responding to criticism, mainly from the opposition Die Linke, a hard left party that opposes all German military activity abroad.
Merkel’s cabinet is to pick next Wednesday a list of army surplus gear to donate. Officials have indicated no guns would be included.
