The crisis rocking the sleepy town of Oko in Orumba North Council of?Anambra state, twhich led to the razing down of the palace and?personal effects of the town?s monarch-Prof Laz Ekwueme and those of?some citizens in the community has attracted the attention of the?Anamabra council of Traditional rulers.

The monarchs, rising from a general meeting at the Anambra state
Government House yesterday called on the state governor, Chief Willie
Obiano to set up a judicial panel of inquiry to immediately look into
the case..

This was re-enforcing the earlier call by the Oko monarch to the state
Govt to set up a panel of enquiry to quickly look into the long drawn
standoff which he alleged was being fuelled by the Rector of the
Federal Polytechnic in the town.

The crisis which took root with the appointment of Prof Godwin Onu and
his re-appointment as the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic in the
town(Fedpoly,Oko) has been raging and allegedly got to a head on
Saturday with an altercation between some soldiers and some youth
suspected to be mercenaries imported to cause mayhem in the community.

Before now, the town had been polarized between the youths and the
elders led by the town union and HRH Ekwueme.

The community leaders had allegedly accused the rector of gross
incompetence, incitement/financially inducing the Oko youths,
meddlesomeness and subterranean moves to relocate the polytechnic to
his nearby community of Ezira. They described his first term as the
lowest point in the life of the progressive institution. That the
rector has the worst record of relationship with both the staff of the
institution and the community, alleging that he derides every citizen
of Oko, while arming/inducing the town’s youth with so much funds that
they flout all known laws and orders.

Speaking for the first time since the weekend when he was alleed to
have been chased out of the community by the rampaging youths and
other elements alleged to have been hired for the purpose, Prof
Ekwueme who is the sibling of the former Vice President, Dr Alex
Ekwueme, said his life was in serious danger. He therefore appealed to
the governor to provide him with adequate security. He alleged that
some leaders were beaten up by the rampaging army of ostensibly hired
youths who were suspected to have been procured to unleash mayhem on
the town and her citizens.

According to him, things got to a head over the weekend when some
listed 13 persons insisted on flouting a collective resolution of the
community banning masquerades in the 2014 annual Afia Olu celebration.
That when the outlaws evidently overwhelmed the police, Army was then
brought in.and one of then was injured when they dared the soldiers
and attacked his palace. From then, hell was let loose and they went
about the community destroying properties of persons they suspect to
be on the side of the monarch.

Also, some suspected thugs were again procured to attack the monarch
and some journalists who went to hear from the monarch at the
government House yesterday. The hoodlums were alleged to be on a daily
pay of N10,000 each since weekend.
