A coalition of advocacy groups, on Monday, wrote the governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode and Mr Jimi Agbaje, to state clearly their positions on the issue of water privatisation in the state.
Made up of Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, Public Services International for Africa and Arab Countries, Corporate Accountability International and the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporation, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE), the coalition said they were worried that the Lagos State Water Corporation (LSWC), with the support of the World Bank and private water corporations, is pushing very hard for a dangerous privatisation of water in Lagos.
The copy of the letter made available to Daily Times states:
?Since 1979, the Lagos State government has obtained loans from the World Bank, French government, and international donor agencies to fund water supply expansion schemes, such as the iju, Adiyan, and Ishasi Waterworks, as well as expansion of distribution networks.
