?To Institute Measures To Forestall Building Disasters

20140318_103917Members of the General Assembly of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) have declared their unflinching support for the Mayor of Accra, Dr. Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije in his efforts to ensure that all unauthorized structures, and ongoing construction works without permits are demolished.

This follows a recent disaster at Nii Boi Town where a 6-unit story building collapsed resulting in the death of one person.

At a press briefing to make their intentions known, the General Assembly noted in a statement that they solidly support the Mayor in interdicting of the three building inspectors and the arrest of the building owner.

They indicated that the Mayor has taken major steps in ensuring that future disasters such as the one which recently occurred are prevented, hence the need for them as Assembly men to give their all in support of his actions.

The Assembly also noted that there have been some unguarded statements being made by some social commentators in the media in relation to the collapsed building.

This, they averred necessitated their action to come out and enlighten the general public on the activities and actions the Mayor is putting in place as regards these developments.

The General Assembly in its statement revealed that there have been meetings with Building Inspectors with the Chief Executive Officer of the Assembly, Dr. Okoe Vanderpuije where activities at their various posts vis a vis complaints received were on agenda.

?At this meeting, the Building Inspectors were informed of the MCE?s intentions of withdrawing all of them from their various posts to constitute two (2) teams who will thoroughly search the communities and identify unauthorized structures and bring such developers to book,? the statement said.

After two weeks, the building inspectors presented their reports which led to directives by the MCE to as a matter of urgency, issue stop work noticed and warnings on developments without the requisite building permits when cited.

?Building Inspectors are to monitor such developments after warning, report to the Director of Works of the Assembly or the MCE himself where developers have refused to heed to the warnings.?

According to the General Assembly, the MCE has instituted Fridays Inspection with a team of Heads of Departments, Sub-Metro Directors, and Chairpersons, where workers working in buildings with stop work notices will be arrested.

??Also, high rise buildings are to be inspected by the head office team and not the Sub-Metros.?

The Assembly members have also indicated that if these directives are followed to the latter, the problems with collapsed buildings will be addressed.

They expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased who died during the disaster, and advised residents and building inspectors not to hesitate to report suspected developers to the Assembly for appropriate action.
