Ahead Of 2012 Elections…Ministers Desert Mills

The Publisher has for quite sometime now observed strangely how many top functionaries of the ruling party are going about the party’s activities without the involvement of President John Evans Atta Mills, who incidentally makes rare public appearance.

It is also curious to note that some NDC parliamentary candidates have either deliberately or mistakenly left Prof Mills out of their billboards ahead of the 2012 election. This political gaffe is fuelling speculation that the president might step down before the election.

Most of the NDC candidates in Greater Accra and Eastern region have left out president Mills for reasons not known to party members in the area. Unlike their political opponents, the NPP who have the picture of Nana Akufo Addo, the presidential candidate alongside their parliamentary candidates, some NDC aspirants appear to have little or no faith in the ability of the president to boost their chances of winning their respective seats.

Driving through the newly constructed N1 Highway, one can sight what is probably the biggest billboard in town, displaying Ras Mubarak, the NDC parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma North. Conspicuously missing on the billboard, is the picture of the president.

Though the constituency is an NPP strong hold and it is almost impossible for one to understand how Ras Mubarak would win the seat, The Publisher has gathered that, the youngpolitician former Reggae presenter, is going round telling NDC members and some members of the public that he doesn’t need the president to win the election hence the absence of the Mills’ picture on his billboard.

Local Government Minister and former NDC National Organiser Samuel Ofosu Ampofo whose candidature is creating division in the Tema West constituency of the NDC is also one of the parliamentary candidates, whose billboard has no picture of the president.

The minister has a huge billboard welcoming people to the constituency at Lashibi Roundabout Community 20 and other parts of Tema West and strangely enough, the NDC presidential candidate has been left out. After failing to win the Fanteakwa seat in 2004 and 2008, Mr Ampofo, turned to Tema West to revive his political fortunes by contesting the party’s primary, which he won.

However, a high ranking party official in the constituency, who pleaded anonymity, confided in the Publisher that the minister, who is taking credit for all development projects in the area, is making their (NDC) work difficult for them and expressed fears that NDC votes will reduce if he continues the way he is going.

But another school of thought has it that Mr Ampofo has the resources needed to meet the NPP boot –for- boot and wrestle power to be able to win the seat for them.

Mr. Ampofo took possession of streetlights meant for Tema West MP for distribution and did the distribution himself without the knowledge of the MP.

Eastern Regional Minister, Victor Smith who admitted lying about former president Kufuor, also has huge billboards in Abuakwa North without President Mills’ picture.

He allegedly told party bigwigs who questioned him on why he left out President Mills that it was his style of marketing himself in the constituency.
