AGA Engages Stakeholders

Peter Anderton, AGA Chief Executive

The new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), Peter Anderton on Friday hosted a stakeholders’ forum as part of meetings lined up to mobilize people to confront challenges facing the Obuasi mine.

Addressing a gathering at the Anyinam Lodge in Obuasi, Mr. Anderton noted that AGA’s operations in the 1990s, which involved mainly open-pit and tailings mining, caused an environmental problem for the communities.

He described the situation as unfortunate and tragic, but stated that the company had instituted a programme to deal with the lingering legacy issues.

“Not only do we have infrastructure and facility deficits but also legacy issues that ought to be cleaned up in order to restore the environment in Obuasi for future generation,” the AGA Chief Executive stressed.

To this end, Mr. Anderton said the management of AGA had studied the issues and assembled competent people with a plan and funding commitment from the company’s headquarters to repair the damage.

He disclosed that they had identified that AGA (which was formerly known as Ashanti Goldfields) lost its way as far as relationship with the communities, EPA, Minerals Commission and key stakeholders was concerned.

According to him, even though management under his leadership had the responsibility to address the matter, it was equally important for them to repair the breakdown relationship with key stakeholders, particularly the communities.

Speaking at a forum dubbed: “Knowing Ourselves Better,” John Owusu, Public Affairs Director of AGA, said AGA cannot win the ‘battle’ without the involvement of the key stakeholders.
