879422496_elvis-Afriyie-AnkrahFormer Minister of Youth and Sports, Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah says he returned to government chest an amount of $ 4,444,053.59 out of the $ 9,417,024.87 approved by the government for the 2014 World Cup.

The amount, he said, represented the balance of the World Cup expenditure. The expenditure includes appearance fees and other travel expenses.

He made the revelations when he appeared before the Presidential Commission investigating Ghana’s botched World Cup campaign in Brazil.

The total breakdown is as follows;

The actual amount approved by Government for the World Cup was $ 9,417,024.87 and after subtracting bank charges and exchange losses, the amount left was $498,079.81.

This means the total amount received was $8,918,945.

Out of the received amount a total $4,474,891.59 was spent on the team. The approved budget sum was meant to take the Stars right from the group stages of the competition to knockout stages but with Ghana exiting the tournament in the first round, a surplus from the budgeted sum was recorded.

An amount of $ 4,444,053.59 is supposed to return to government coffers.

The minister could not say if the amount had been returned to government chest, except to say that the Ministry?s Chief Accountant, Mr Prosper Apasu, would have that information.
