The 24th Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Africa Conference and Exhibition was officially kicked off on Tuesday in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa aiming at promoting the aviation industry on the African continent.
Aviation MRO suppliers and stakeholders across the world are attending the three-day event.
Attracting about 200 participants in the conference and more than 50 companies around the globe in the exhibition, the event aims at promoting the aviation industry in Africa, said Nick Fadugba, CEO of African Aviation Services Limited, and former Secretary General of African Airlines Association.
Fadugba said African governments should assist the aviation by addressing challenges related to tax in the industry, and also by implementing promises they have already made to liberalize aviation on the continent.
He underlined the need that African airlines should work together and the countries on the continent should open their skies to each other to secure social and economic benefits Africa is missing out on.
African nations adopted the Yamoussoukro Decision in Cote d’ Ivoire in 1999, which committed them to deregulating air services and to promoting regional air markets opening to transnational competition.
Recalling the commitment of African governments to liberalize aviation in Africa to promote air transport development, Fadugba emphasized on the need to translate the promises into action and implementation to get the benefits Africa deserves.
He also noted that the conference is organized to reach African governments and implore them to provide the necessary support to aviation and also take actions towards developing the industry, which he said is a catalyst for socio economic development on the continent.
Stating about Africa’s economic development, Tewolde Gebreamariam, CEO of the Ethiopian Airlines, noted that there is huge opportunity for the aviation industry on the continent.
Some of the companies participating in the exhibition told Xinhua that the event provides them with the opportunity to promote their businesses to African markets.
Liu Weifeng, Commercial Manager at China Aviation Planning and Construction Development Co. Ltd, said his company has successfully completed many hangar projects in China.
Liu said the Company now wants to expand its business in Africa with focus on aviation facilities such as hangars, terminals, and runways among others, for which he said MRO Africa Conference and Exhibition is a good opportunity. Enditem
