AfDB opens annual general assembly

Representatives of the 80 member states of the African Development Bank (AfDB) met on Monday in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire’s capital, for the opening of the bank’s annual general meeting. AfDB
This year’s meeting which coincides with the institution’s 50th anniversary, will see members elect a new president for the AfDB Group.
During the five day meeting, participants will debate and discuss in various panels and conferences on the theme “Africa and the New Global Landscape.”
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Cote d’Ivoire’s Planing and Development Minister Albert Mabri Toikeuse said “the theme should inspire participants to propose ways to develop the continent.”
“In this new landscape, structural transformation of the continent’s economy is the only way for promoting sustainable development, through creation of jobs and quality social services, ” he continued.
Toikeusse expressed his sincere gratitude to outgoing AfDB president Donald Kaberuka for his efforts and determination to return the bank’s headquarters to Abidjan.
AfDB was relocated to Tunis after the outbreak of a political crisis in Cote d’Ivoire in 2002, but it was returned to Abidjan in September last year. Enditem
