Acting IGP makes major changes

THE acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, has made major changes in the top hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service.

The changes did not affect only some members of the Headquarters Management Advisory Board (HEMAB), but also saw the elevation of a number of service personnel to higher positions.

According to a March 27, 2013 correspondence, signed by Mr Alhassan, a copy of which is available to the Daily Graphic, the Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has been elevated to the position of Regional Commander, with Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACOP) Mr Timothy Bonga Yoosa, the Divisional Commander for the Nima Division, becoming his deputy, while ACP Mr Angwubotoge Awuni, the Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), has been moved to the Police Headquarters as Director, MTTU, to superintendent all MTTU operations in the country.

Mr Awuni will be replaced by Chief Superintendent Mohammed Suraji, the incumbent Director of the Community Police Unit.

As part of the administrative changes, which are to take effect from April 1, 2013, DCOP Mr David Ampah-Bennin moves from Technical Services to become the Director-General, Department of Public Affairs.

The Central Regional Police Commander, Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Stephen Andoh-Kwofie, takes over from DCOP Mrs Mina Ayim as Director-General, Welfare. DCOP Ayim, however, remains at the Police Headquarters.

The correspondence said COP Alhaji Hamidu Mahama has been reassigned to Special Duties, while COP Mr Patrick Timbillah moves from the Accra Region to become the Director-General of Human Resource Development.

It said COP Mr James Oppong-Buanuh moves from the Police Intelligence and Professional Bureau (PIPS) to become the Director-General responsible for Services, while COP Mr Frank Adu-Poku becomes the Director-General, Technical.

In other changes, DCOP Mr Kofi Boakye becomes the new Western Regional Police Commander, while the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr George Tuffuor, takes over from Mr Boakye as Director, Training and Education.

It named the Upper East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr Bright Oduro, as the Commandant of the Police College to replace DCOP Mr Yaagy Akuribah, who moves to head the Eastern Region.

The incumbent Director-General, Legal and Prosecutions, DCOP Mr Ken Yeboah, moves to take over as Northern Regional Police Commander, with the Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Police Commander, DCOP Mr Alex Quainoo, heading for the Upper East Region as Commander.

It said the Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander, ACOP Mr Kwasi Mensah Duku, is the new Upper West Regional Commander, while ACOP Mr Simon Yaw Afeku, Director, Operations, becomes the Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander.
