Mr Samuel Justice Adjei, the Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, has appealed to health personnel to emulate foreign volunteers by accepting postings to deprived communities.

He said the refusal of some health personnel to work in communities where their services were mostly needed was of much concern to the government.

Mr Adjei made the appeal when he addressed the 16th Matriculation of the Holy Family Nursing and Midwifery Training College at Berekum in the Brong- Ahafo Region.

He said it was unfortunate that few health personnel who accepted to work in areas with less endowed health facilities were ridiculed by their colleagues in the urban areas.

Mr Adjei pledged government?s determination to improve health facilities in the country since no nation could develop without a strong and healthy human resource base.

He urged the students to understand their chosen profession well and be guided that they were being trained to provide services to humanity and must therefore be prepared to serve in every community in the country.

Most Reverend Mathew Kwasi Gyamfi, the Catholic Bishop of Sunyani, urged the students to draw a distinction between their profession and committing crime with their knowledge and skills.

He said because nurses worked closely with medical practitioners, they would be exposed to some controversial ethical challenging issues but should have in mind that they had philosophical and ethical components.

Mrs Monica Nkrumah, Principal of the College, said 2,211 candidates applied for admission this year but only 160 of them, representing eight per cent, were admitted due to inadequate facilities.

She said out of the number admitted, 100 of them made up of 70 women and 30 men would pursue the Registered General Nursing programme and  60 women would pursue Midwifery.

Mrs Nkrumah said the college curricula would equip them with professional tools to meet the health needs of individuals, families and communities.

She urged the students to be confident and learn hard to become successful nurses and midwives.
