The Abu Dhabi Police discussed the means of cooperation with the Regulatory Authority of the International Extreme Medicine Conference in London with a view to leveraging the experience of the elite participants in the Conference. This measure aims at ensuring better preparation for the Emergency Medicine Conference, to be organized by the Emergency and Public Safety Department at the Directorate General of Central Operations in Abu Dhabi next year.

A delegation led by Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim Al Ameri, Head of the Emergency and Public Safety Department at Abu Dhabi Police, took part in the conference, which discussed topics related to pre-hospital emergency care, disaster and relief medicine, remote areas and expedition, air ambulance missions, and the lessons learned from the London?s air ambulance services.

Lieutenant Colonel Al Ameri indicated that the delegation was briefed on London?s air ambulance experience, as well as the daily services provided to London?s more than 10 million citizens. The delegation also reviewed the training process to enable ambulance personnel to carry out their duties. ?The London?s Air Ambulance services are highly developed and provided by the Institute of Pre-hospital Care,? added Al Ameri.

Adding further Lieutenant Colonel Al Ameri noted that the conference’s topics are consistent with the attention dedicated by the Abu Dhabi Police to qualifying emergency response teams and honing their skills, by adopting the best practices that contribute to saving lives, reducing the risk of complications, and providing advanced care to handle all pre-hospital emergency challenges.

Furthermore, the Head of the Emergency and Public Safety Department praised the valuable information provided by the workshops, which included an introduction and overview of London?s Air Ambulance who is celebrating 25 years of the capital?s flying emergency service and saved the lives of more than 30,000 people. ?The workshops also tackled various topics; namely, the role of pre-hospital doctors in the international response to humanitarian disasters around the world; crew resource management at complex pre-hospital scenes; opportunities for medical students in pre-hospital care, emergency thoracotomy and emergency neurosurgery; resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA)and pre-hospital advanced airway,? explained Lieutenant Colonel Al Ameri.

The Conference also addressed case-based issues and the tasks of pre-hospital emergency teams; damage control anesthesia in pre-hospital interventions in injuries caused by road accidents, motorcycle burns and accidents, major falls, pre-hospital blood transfusion in civilian traumas and explosions. The conference also provided an introduction to emergency care in remote areas, such as drowning, hypothermia, frostbites; the challenges in difficult water surfaces, the effects of high altitudes on the human body; disaster medicine and humanitarian relief.

In conclusion, Lieutenant Colonel Al Ameri noted that the conference tackled disaster medicine and emergency response to humanitarian disasters; anesthesia and orthopedic surgeries in disaster areas; mental health needs and injuries of displaced persons, refugees and elderly in disaster areas, and professional humanitarian relief in crises and disasters, due to the diversity of risks and challenges faced by emergency teams in the pre-hospital care.
