AASU On Xenophobic Attacks In South Africa

0

Once again South Africans have succumbed to xenophobia against their fellow African brothers with the complicity of key personalities like the Zulu king Goodwill Zwelithi. The king was quoted to have said at a recent gathering that ?foreigners should pack and go? because they are taking jobs from citizens. This sparked the dastardly acts of looting and setting shops ablaze and machete-wielding attackers hacking immigrants to death in major cities in South Africa. In January this year looters burned businesses owned by foreigners in another wave of xenophobic attacks.
Seven years ago, Johannesburg was the epicenter of more anti-immigrants tensions that left dozens dead in attacks that later spread to Cape Town. It is sad to note that these shameful acts are becoming a normal situation in a country that has just come out, with the full support of peace loving people around the world and particularly their African brothers, of the shackles of the obnoxious apartheid system.
It is highly misleading to link the difficulties that the majority of South Africans are facing to the African immigrants. The situation of the people of South Africa can be traced to the deep disparities created by the previous apartheid regime and the current management of the country. It will take a committed, selfless and visionary leadership to heal the wounds created by the apartheid regime.
South Africa is not and cannot be an island. It will need others as others will need it to forge its forward match to sustainable development.
AASU condemns unreservedly these shameful xenophobic acts and calls for the culprits to be brought to justice.
AASU calls on the South African government not to leave any stone unturned to bring up normalcy in the country.
Long live African integration!
