Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Georgina Theodora Wood has unveiled her administration?s proposal to build three special Courts to handle disputes emanating from the maritime industry.

The special Courts to be located in Accra, Tema and Takoradi Harbour will by extension deal with disputes connected to the oil and gas industry.

Mrs. Justice Georgina Wood said with the offshore discovery and the exploitation of Ghana?s oil and gas resources coupled with increased international trade it was necessary to establish the special courts.

The Chief Justice brought this to the fore in Accra at the opening ceremony of the 9thedition of the Maritime Law Seminar for Judges of the Superior Courts of Judicature.

Mrs. Georgina Wood therefore called for a paradigm shift from the traditional dispensation of justice associated with domestic and international transactions.

?Ghana belongs to the international maritime community with a very large number of its citizens operating as mariners globally; it is therefore important that we all come to terms with the complexities that attend to the interplay between domestic law and international law in the treatment of sea fearers in marine accidents.?

According to the Chief Justice, her administration in partnership with the Ghana Shippers Authority has secured sponsorship package for three Judges to undertake a two-year post graduate specialization course in maritime law in Malta.

She hence challenged the Judges to adjust themselves to the challenges associated with the digital revolution in the dispensation of justice at all levels.

The Minister for Justice and Attorney Generals Department, Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong urged the Judges to take advantage of the seminar and strengthen their professional competence in line with best international standards.

?I am confident that these seminars will equip our Judges with the requisite skills to enable them demonstrate to the international community that Ghana?s judiciary stands tall in the dispensation of justice in specialized areas.?

She stressed that professional competence remained a major requirement for Judges continuous stay in office and their elevation and that much was expected of the Judicial Service.

?It is our firm believe that the confidence reposed in the judicial system by the business community and for that matter the citizens of Ghana will be strengthened if Judges have the depth and diversity of knowledge which extend into intricate and technical fields of law governing commercial matters especially international trade and transport.?
