2014 Spelling Bee Winner Receives Laptop

image001On the 1st?of February 2014, Rohit Sahijwani, of the Delhi Public International School, won the 2013/14 Annual Spelling Bee competition in Accra.? MultiChoice Ghana Limited, presented an Acer laptop to her as part of her prize package, which also included an all-expense paid trip to the United States of America to represent Ghana at?the 87th Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition, MTN products worth GHC150, $2,500 spending money from Indomie, an Ecobank Junior Saver Account, a certificate of participation and a gold medal.

A total of seventy-seven (77) spellers from junior high schools across the ten (10) regions participated in the event which was held at the Osu Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Hall in Accra. After eight competitive rounds, three pupils from the Delhi Public School International in Accra won the top three prizes at this year?s finals; Rohit Sahijwani being the winner whilst Vishal Thakwani and?Destin Nana Kojo Ellis were the first and second runners up respectively.

 

The Spelling Bee is an initiative of the Young?Educators?Foundation, a local NGO dedicated to children?s education in Ghana.?The competition seeks to harness the contestant?s ability to be good spellers, pronouncers and speakers of the English language.

In addition to sponsoring schools and students to participate in the Spelling Bee competition, MultiChoice also invests in the MultiChoice Resource Centre project, an initiative in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (GES) that provides schools with facilities and logistics to enable disadvantaged Junior and Senior Secondary schools use DStv?s educational programming to illustrate some of the topics in their curriculum. Every year, schools are identified by the GES to be recipients of DStv HDPVR decoders, television sets and the DStv Educational Bouquet.

The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards is also another MultiChoice CSI project and a partnership with Eutelsat S.A. that aims at stimulating interest amongst students in the areas of science and technology and also to inspire innovative thinking among high school students across Africa through an essay writing and poster designing competition.? In February 2014, Ghanaian student, Lloyd Osei Baffour of Prempeh College was announced as the overall winner in the poster category for the 2013 edition at the recently held DStv Eutelsat Star Awards Gala Dinner in Accra. ?In 2011, another Ghanaian student, Michael Yeboah also won the overall poster prize and visited Eutelsat S.A. facilities in France with his father and also had his poster placed on the shell of a satellite which is now orbiting space.
