2012 Cowbell Tour of Ghana commences

Mankessim, May 15, GNA – The second edition of the 2012 Cowbell Tour of Ghana Cycling race began on Tuesday with the first stage from Mallam Junction in Accra to Mankessim in the Central Region.

The first stage of the competition was won by Samuel Anim of Young Stars Cycling Club at a time of 2:35:36 to annex the Yellow Jersey over a distance of 93-kilometres.

He was followed by John Zormelo of the Quick Step Club and William Nartey of H.M Club whilst Die Hard Club won the Best Team Award.

The Cowbell Tour of Ghana is being organized by the Ghana Cycling Federation with support from Promasidor Ghana Limited, Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Authority (NSA), Bic, TV3, Multimedia Group, Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Ghana Police Service amongst others.

Wolanyo Agra, Director General of the NSA in an address to usher the cyclists for the start of the race said that the performance of the cyclists will compel the Authority into getting them the needed equipment to develop the sport.

He called on people on the various routes to be part of the race and give the cyclists the needed support to make the sport popular.

Sahnoon Mohamed, President of the Ghana Cycling Federation advised the cyclists to conform to the rules and regulations governing the sport to enable them compete with their counterparts at international events.

He said the Tour of Ghana is also aimed at selecting the best cyclists to represent the country in international competitions.

Olivier Thiry, Managing Director of Promasidor Ghana Limited, producers of Cowbell, said they are committed to supporting cycling to become a major sporting event in the country.

He said with the support of their partners and collaborators, this year’s event a huge success and memorable.
