The Minister of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST), Madam Sherry Ayittey, has observed that the potential threat of climate change is adversely posing as danger to Ghana’s water resources, food security, fisheries and cocoa production.

She also added that the current climatic threat poses a danger to the energy, health and the land resources of the nation and called for proactive actions towards it as a matter of urgency.

Ms Ayittey made these when she was delivering the keynote address at the launch of the 2nd National Health, Environment and Safety Conference and Exhibition which was dubbed (CONFEX 2012) held in Accra earlier this week.

The event which was under the chairmanship of Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah was actively facilitated by the Ministries of Health, MEST and Employment & Social Welfare in collaboration with other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) as well as the private sector.

According to Ms Ayittey, the need for investment in health, the environment and safety education was crucial since it would go a long way to promote adaptation and mitigation measures to confront the consequences of climate change and environmental degradation and enhance human and social development.

She said MEST would support private sector initiatives and called on stakeholders to buy into the vision for an accelerated environmental and biodiversity protection framework.

CONFEX 2012 is an integrated strategic vision promoted by stakeholders towards the implementation of policies and programmes within the framework of the National Development Planning Policy.

It is a public-private partnership initiative with a strong drive to achieve well-defined objectives and targets under the Millennium Development Goals 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8, namely reducing child mortality rate, improving maternal health, combating HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases, ensuring environmental sustainability and developing a global partnership for development.

Over 2,000 participants, 2,000 students, 100 exhibitors, dignitaries including ministers of state, ambassadors, chief executives, UN officials and more than 2,000 visitors and targeted groups are expected at the four-day event scheduled to be held from the 16th to the 19th of May, 2012.

CONFEX 2012, which is being organized by Maximum Growth Africa Limited, is on the theme: ‘A healthy environmental governance framework—A quest for enhanced private sector productivity, Job creation, industrial safety and national wellness.”
