2010 Population Census: Women outnumber men as Ghana hits over 24m


The Ghana Statistical Service has announced that per the 2010 Population and Housing Census, there are more females in Ghana than males.

The figures which were announced on Thursday also indicated that the total population of Ghana currently stands at 24,658,823 as against 18,912,079 in 2000.

The total number of women in Ghana stands at 12,633,978 as against that of men which is 12,024,845. The figures of the 2000 Population and Housing Census also indicated that there were more females than males but the gap seemed to have closed up for the 2010 census.

On the regional basis, the Ashanti region has the highest number with 4,780,380. This was closely followed by the Greater Accra region which has 4,010,054.

This was followed by the Eastern region, then Northern region then the Western region, Brong Ahafo region, Central region, Volta region, Upper East and lastly Upper West region with the least population of 702,110.
