Bawku (UE), March 2, GNA-Twenty communities in the Bawku Municipality and its

environs are benefiting from a United Nations’ joint programme on human security to empower

and promote the socio-economic development of the people.

The programme aims at creating an enabling environment for capacity building of

individuals and communities in the three northern regions to enhance conflict prevention through

Integrated and people centred approaches.

The programme is on the theme, “Enhancing human security through developing local

capacity for holistic community-based conflict prevention in northern Ghana”.

As part of the programme, about 100 farmers from the 20 communities received five sheep each to boost live stock rearing in the area. The beneficiaries are expected to breed the animals and then give away five offspring to others in their communities.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Mr Musah Abduliah, Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku, said the offer was a God sent opportunity that would re-equip them with the needed resources to rise above their difficulties.

He urged the farmers to take good care of the animals in order to pay back in the next two years and also make profit for their households.

Mr Abduliah called on the people of Bawku to use the opportunity to prove to all that they

appreciate the peace process, by maintaining peace in the area.

Mr Francis Xavier Apumbora, Bawku Municipal Director of Agriculture, stressed the need

for the farmers to give ample attention to the programme because it would take them out of poverty and bring about development to their communities.

He said agriculture was the backbone of the country’s growth and that there was the need for

all farmers to take their work seriously.

Mr Adams Zibilim Sunka, a beneficiary, thanked his benefactors and said they would make good use of the package and make poverty an issue of the past.
