Police arrest 20 for sitting on moving train

The Director of Operations, Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Niyi Alli, said on Tuesday that 20 persons had been arrested in Ikeja for sitting on a moving train. He said in Lagos that the arrested persons were nabbed by policemen from the Nigerian Railway Police Command in an early morning raid.

Alli noted that the raid was aimed at arresting the increasing incidence of persons who sat on moving trains, which he described as “suicidal.?? The NRC director said the arrested persons were in police custody, while further investigations were being carried out.

“We want to completely put a stop to the act of riding on train tops, because it is suicidal. We have stationed policemen at Agege, Iju, Mushin, Ijoko and Ikeja to stop such activities,?? he said.

Mr Paul Ndibe, the Lagos District Manager of the NRC, who also spoke on the development, said that a group of people sitting on moving trains had been attacking some passers-by.

“On Saturday, some people came to my office to report that they were injured when some rooftop riders were hurling stones and dangerous objects at passers-by who were trying to take their photographs. Some parked commercial buses at the Ikeja bus stop were damaged during the clash.

“We also got a report that the rooftop riders again on Monday hurled dangerous weapons, including bottles and stones, at passers-by, and so we deployed some policemen to arrest the situation,” he said.
