A six-hour strike by pilots from Lufthansa budget airline Germanwings left about 15,000 passengers stranded on Friday.

Western Global AirlinesThe Cologne-based Germanwings was forced to cancel 116 flights between 0400 and 1000 GMT after pilots walked off the job as part of a long-running dispute with Lufthansa about retirement benefits.

Domestic German services were particularly hard hit by the industrial action, which came in the wake of the breakdown in talks between the pilots union Vereinigung Cockpit and the airline.

Germanwing passengers were forced to either wait until the end of the strike or make alternative arrangements.

Lufthansa pilots staged a three-day strike in April in pursuit of their demands for better retirement provisions, costing the airline 60 million euros (80 million dollars).

The 5,400 pilots employed at Lufthansa, Germanwings and Lufthansa Cargo want the company to maintain its current retirement benefits system, under which they can retire early at 55 and continue to receive part of their wages. Lufthansa wants to scrap the plan.
