1 Million Apps soon on Apple?s App Store

APPLE iO6 RELEASE

Just when you thought you needed some more Apps for your iPhone or iPad within about a week there should be 1 million Apps on Apple AAPL -0.76%?s App Store. At the end of November 148Apps.biz had counted 997,673 active Apps (998,919 as of Dec. 9) and on average there are 138 being added every day. (Note that my family and I own Apple shares).

148Apps.biz has been tracking the number of Apps since the fall of 2008 when there 10,000 Apps available. It grabs data from the App Store and has historical data going back to July 2008. Based on its numbers the 1 million App threshold should be breached on about Dec. 17 and come from over 262,000 publishers. Another interesting statistic is that there are over 370,000 Apps that are no longer available for download.

Games make up 18% of the total Apps available

Games make up the largest category of Apps with 181,613, or 18%. Education Apps were the second largest category with 107,844 (11%) and Entertainment was third with 81,690 (8%). Lifestyle at 8%, Business at 7.7% and Books at 5.6% are in fourth through six positions.

Over 60% of Apps are free but they can cost over $1,000

Of the 998,917 Apps 616,369 (62% of total Apps) are free, or at least start out that way. Many Apps use the Freemium model where the initial download is free but if you would like advanced features you have to pay to get them.

Not surprisingly $0.99 has the second highest percentage of Apps with over 187,000 or almost 19% of the total Apps and pretty much at every $1 increment the percentage of Apps at that price point decreases. It is interesting to note that there are 46 Apps and 1 Gaming App that cost $999.99 or more that are available.

If you wanted to buy all the ?regular? Apps it would cost you $1,247,426.86. This works out to be $1.53 per ?regular? App but if you remove the free ones the average cost is $4.08.

For Gaming Apps it would cost you $136,729.66 or $0.75 per App. However if you remove the free Gaming Apps the average cost rises to $1.78.

I have also heard that many Apps go on sale around holidays by either becoming free or at a discount. It is not just major holidays so in case you find an App you would like during the year make a wishlist and check it out at various times if you can wait.

Long-term ramifications

Developing an ecosystem and linking iOS devices together is one way that Apple is trying to make sure it does not follow the same fate as the Mac did against Windows systems. So far it is doing a very good job against Google and Android but this is a marathon, not a sprint, so the company will continue to need to develop additional functionality to increase the switching cost of iOS users. I believe Touch ID in the iPhone 5s, iBeacon and having 64bit technology in the A7 chip are steps in the right direction.
